Job Description

This individual will provide support to at-risk students at the secondary level

through connecting families to school, participating in individual educational planning meetings, working to address problems in a student's living situation that affect the child's adjustment to school, preparing a social or developmental history on a child, mobilzing family, school, and community resources to enable the child to learn as effectively as possible in their educational program and assisting in developing positive behavioral intervention strategies.  The creation of this program is reflective of the increasing social, emotional and family needs of our secondary students as well as the increasing amount of mental illness and lack of available community resources to provide adequate individual and family support.  This position will work closely with our Behavior Interventionist, Counselors and Dean of Students at the High School as well as the district Coordinator of Special Programs to individually plan for students, provide crisis intervention, assist with conflict resolution, social skills acquisition and assisting parents to access programs available to students both within the school system and the community.


     Requirements, Qualities, Knowledge, Skills and Requirements

·       A master’s degree in social work (MSW) or school counseling from a program representing intensive course work in the principles and practice of social work or school counseling therapeutic intervention strategies for children and families; the organization and administration of school-based support services, and the psychology of learning; BOEE licensure in school social work or professional school counseling 

·       Experience working in a school setting is preferred.

·       Knowledgeable in individual and small-group counseling techniques, engagement strategies, student assessment procedures, familiar with the state and district’s testing procedures, able to facilitate appropriate positive and professional relationships with at-risk students, parents, and school faculty and community.

·       Prior experience working with at-risk teens, families, programs, program implementation evaluation, and data collection preferred.

Display an outstanding knowledge of child development in areas of social and environmental conditions, cultural diversity, psychopathology and family systems

  • Conduct interviews involving students and parents to problem solve issues pertaining to non-attendance and establish a course of action

  • Support the school in adhering to school board regulations on truancy and absenteeism

  • Regular attendance of student support team meetings 

  • Develop and host specialist developmental training for parents and educational personnel

  • Serve as connection between the school and families to foster positive cooperative processes in educational planning for students by ensuring engagement of parent/guardian in school activities

  • Administer psycho educational social skill groups, classroom presentations and meetings on recognized aspects of concern for the students
